The Word on the Street

Toronto’s massive Word on the Street book fair celebrated its 14th anniversary on Sunday, September 23, 2012. Each year, the Toronto chapter of the Romance Writers of America, the Toronto Romance Writers, rents and staffs a booth alongside a number of other writers’ groups in an area designated “Writer’s Block.” (The big white tent in the background.)

Last year was windy and necessitated the glamorous use of rocks to keep our promotional items from flying away. This year we faced challenging wet and cool weather between moments of glorious sun.

But neither rain nor slightly cool temperatures could keep the volunteers or the visitors away. Our booth was thronged with people interested in romance and writing and romance writing. We expect to see a few new faces at our chapter meetings in the coming months.

Our enthusiastic volunteers not only braved the elements, but sported welcoming smiles to greet the people who flocked to our booth. Volunteers this year were: Sherry Isaac (who helped set up and stayed all day), Sharon Clare, Ann Lethbridge, Vicki Essex, Jacqui Lyonelle, Mary Sullivan, Adrienne Clarke, Simone St. James, Susan Douglas, Sarah Shepherd, Stephanie Bedwell-Grime, Carol Newhouse, Leah Breamel, Louisa Lo, Esther Deitch, Wayne Tedder, Irene Jordane, Joan Leacott and Kate Freiman (who once again, ferried all the leftover paraphernalia back to storage).

Here’s what our booth looked like from the perspective of volunteers Carol Newhouse, Simone St. James, Stephanie Bedwell-Grime, Sarah Shepherd and Adrian Clarke.

Our newly acquired display racks held printed promotional items and books cleverly divided into “Naughty” and “Nice.” Can you guess which is which?

In the mix of Naughty and Nice were donated works by many TRW writers including: Deb Cooke, Ann Lethbridge, Michelle Rowen, Stephanie Bedwell-Grime, Sherry Isaac, Mary Sullivan, Leah Breamel, Kate James and Gina X. Grant.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Word on the Street event, by giving their time, sending promo, donating books, or just dropping by.

A big thank you to Gina X. Grant who organizes our Word on the Street booth each year. Here she is handing out the swag:
